# 2 Essentials

I have a message to give you today about the second Essential Doctrine of Christianity.  The first was establishing the Deity of Christ which we did a couple of weeks ago.  This one is called ‘Saved by Grace’.  Its description starts in Ephesians 2 vss 8-9.

Eph 2:8  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Eph 2:9  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

We are saved by grace through faith in what GOD has done.  There is nothing we can do to save ourselves.  If we could do something we would be bragging about it.  Look what I did to be saved, I deserve to be saved, I deserve to go to heaven.  I am proudly very good aren’t I.

Gal 5:4  You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

When you seek to be justified by the Law, as the Galatian Christians were doing again, they severed themselves from Christ.  They no longer believed in grace of what Jesus did on the cross.  They tried to be justified by the flesh and by the law.  So they fell from grace.  The Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry says: “This verse plainly teaches that if you believe that you are saved by faith and works, then you are not saved at all.  They believe this in the cults.  They have a false Jesus and a false doctrine of salvation.”  That is what makes them cults.

In my late twenties I hitch-hiked to Seattle and on the way back I stopped in Eugene, Oregon and hooked up with this group called The Full Moon  Celebration of the Light.  They were going to Shasta to celebrate the full moon.  I got to know their customs a little bit and they had their own avatar.  He had one unbelievable trick: he could look at one of his followers and they would fall to the ground and grovel in the dirt like a snake or something.  He looked at me after I was noticing him a bit but I didn’t fall.  He was this groups false Jesus and wherever they were going in their eternity was their false doctrine of salvation.  They were in my opinion a cult as depicted here.

Gal 2:21  “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

Christians do not nullify grace. But trying to be righteous by the law, by that we nullify grace and then Christ died for nothing.  His death saves and forgives- paid the price for sin- that is what it does. It saves us.

Rom 3:21  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

Apart from the law- we didn’t obey the law perfectly and become righteous on our own- we can’t.  But Jesus did.  He became righteous and gave it to us.  We became righteous through Jesus.  His life and death and this salvation was foretold by the Law and the Prophets.  Leviticus and Isaiah among others.

Rom 4:5  But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

Does not work- One who is not trying to be saved by good works or Law.  He believes in Jesus who justifies the ungodly- us.  This faith is given as righteousness.  Salvation is not universal resurrection as Mormonism says.  I think this Mormon doctrine means that everyone will be resurrected and go to heaven in their view.  But they have a false Jesus and this salvation for all is not from the Bible.  They have many gods and are considered a cult by most Christian scholars.  True salvation is the forgiveness of sins which is accomplished by faith alone.

Rom 4:1  What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

Rom 4:2  For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

Rom 4:3  For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

Abraham believed God- what He said about going to the promised land and being the Father of Many Nations.  This faith made him righteous in Gods eyes.  He is the Father of Faith.  This is the Old Testament roots of faith.  Roman Catholicism denies salvation by grace through faith alone in Christ alone.  They say you must do good works to be saved also and they can never be sure they are going to heaven- no eternal security.

I have been showing to you the Doctrine of Saved by Faith.  It is one out of five Essential Doctrines of Christianity.  It is necessary to believe it just as presented to become a Christian.  If you change it even a little bit in what you believe you can make yourself not a Christian.  This is the way the doctrine is. This is the way it has happened for salvation and this is what Jesus did to make salvation happen.

Why should you believe it?  Because Jesus was God.  He was the greatest of the historical figures who changed life on planet earth immensely.  He worked miracles and He wants us to believe.  We don’t have to be hung from our chest muscles from the ceiling to be His, nor pay a great sum of money like the Romans to become a citizen.  And we don’t have to kill for a 100 foreskins to become a follower of Jesus Christ- just believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again which proves He was God.  If you start a relationship with HIM you can trust Him for personal spiritual growth and the new life you need, for forgiveness and a regenerated mind- not magic but a mind secure in God and peace.

What Makes God Makes Jesus

Jesus shares many of the qualities of God.  I don’t mean He says ‘Hey God you want some of my attributes’!  It is not like that.  But Jesus is GOD and He exhibited many of God’s qualities while on earth.  And He was on earth- just ask Napoleon , H.G. Wells the historian; or Fyodor Dostoyevski.   He did many of the toils of God.  He definitely was, ‘…no mere man’.   God is many great and wonderful things and I’m sure you would agree that His place in history, His personality, and His great works point to the fact that He was more than a great man but God himself in the flesh.

God is omniscient or all knowing.  He knows everything.  Joh 2:24  But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

Joh 2:25  And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Mat 12:25  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

He also knew the history of the Samaritan woman at Jacobs well near Sychar.

Jesus knew things that were not readily knowable by common men.  Thoughts? C’mon, all men?  What was in man?  His evil heart etc.

God alone is worshipped-   Exo 34:14  For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Mat 2:11  And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

Mat 8:2  And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

God is jealous when His people worship other God’s and things.  This also appears in the reading of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20- ‘Thou shall have no other gods before me’.  The Astrologers or wise men from Babylon came and worshipped Him in the manger.  Did they know He was God or some special King or that something special was happening in Israel?  Why so much attention and honor for an earthly king like Herod whom they had met recently in Jerusalem?   The leper worshipped Jesus early in His ministry when He hadn’t worked too many miracles yet.  The word had gotten out and the miracles made Him God- just a few and the man knew!

Only God can forgive sins.    Mar 2:7  Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

Mar 2:5  When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

The Pharisees knew that God can truly forgive sins.  God the sole being who can and they were accusing Him.  In the verse, two previous to this, Jesus had ironically forgiven the paralyzed man’s sins.  In the Bible we consider it to be truth, believing what it says is truth so that these things really did happen and what it says about people and things even the weather is factual.  You don’t have to wonder though sometimes it takes a little figuring out what it is trying to say.  There are some reliable scholars left that believe the whole Word and defend it as infallible.

God is the sole true creator-  To form something that didn’t exist before.  Man can fashion and change materials that already exist, but only God can create.  This is expressed as Jesus the Creator in:  Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

God saves:    3:8  Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Christ saves:   Mat 18:11  For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

And:   Joh 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

I had to go to the King James Version to get the “I AM”.  In the most modern translations and in one Greek document of the New Testament and in Seminaries and in the public in general there is a movement to deny the Deity of Jesus.  They are watering down the Gospel in this way and others thinking that Jesus isn’t God so we don’t have to obey Him.  They want their sex that bad and their sin and their flesh and their world.  Jesus is God.  You can have your heaven now or forever but not both.  When you feel the love of God and His power in you, you will know you can make a change and stick to it.  You’ll know you can endure to the end for Jesus sake.

God is ‘I AM’, Jesus is ‘I AM’       Joh 8:24  I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

Joh 8:58  Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

God and Jesus are KINGS:   Psa 95:3  For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Rev 17:14  These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

God and Jesus are light:   2Sa 22:29  For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.

Joh 9:5  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

God is light,  He brought so much wisdom to the world, so did Jesus.  Things that were never said before, such wisdom that we have always, but will never have again.  ‘He started His empire with love not force and millions of people are ready to die for Him”.  Wisdom is light and knowledge of God and the way to eternity- a reward and fulfillment from the ‘all sufficient one’.

Like God Jesus is Redeemer:   Isa 43:1  But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Salvation is from the Lord.  God redeemed the Jews in the future by sending Jesus when the time was right.  Jesus paid for our sins with His blood the perfect sacrifice- the wrath of God was upon Him so it wouldn’t be on us.  But those that don’t accept this sacrifice will have to undergo that wrath still because ‘they have not believed in the only Son of God’.

God preexists everything as does Jesus:

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Joh 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2  The same was in the beginning with God.

God was already there in the beginning.  Jesus was already there in the beginning- Jesus the WORD.

I have tried to show you some of the attributes of God that He and Jesus had in common.  They are Redeemers and all knowing and Jesus did the works of God and so did the apostles.  We can believe this: the Bible testifies of itself and the people in it.  That door of belief is so close and so ready to open I can feel it.  The word certainly gets my zeal going.  There is nothing that can stop the power of God in a person.  Unless you mean death?  But that person will just wake up in heaven.  God is for us and He uses all that He is for our good.  I pray we get the message and open the door to HIM and His whole new life with the power of the Holy Spirit and love for fellow man and not condemnation.  Look to Jesus and not even to Christians and certainly don’t listen to professors or politicians.  Follow Jesus- nobody seems to have a problem with HIM.
