It Is Not Worth It

Spoken nonjudgmentally the Pros and Cons of getting rich are exposed by a caring and loving One who owns all the cattle and knows what he wants.  All life has its limits.

I chose to speak on the Proverbs again because there is so much information readily available for the speaker.  Just read a chapter a day and there are so many ways to describe what is going on if you stick to the spirit of the thing- Gods Spirit.  We all have His law written on our hearts, so that could be our guide barring any rebellion.

The 23rd was the day of its delivery and I chose vss 4&5 for the subject.

Pro 23:4  Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it.

Pro 23:5  When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

Here are a few short case histories of people who have won the lottery and what happened to them after doing so:  J.D.Jr-  kidnapped by relatives; killed and the rest of his money disappeared.

S.H,  She said her family and loved ones tried to ‘suck the life out of her’.

A couple who won and split the winnings divorced, and lived in separate mansions.  He died from complications of alcoholism.  She died mysteriously but no sign of foul play was found.

A.S,  He was a janitor that became a multimillionaire.  He was found dead after three years.  He was swindled, murdered and found under a five foot thick slab of concrete.  His financial advisor is being tried for this crime.

Some have successfully written books about the lottery but quote:  The financial flameouts of previous big lottery winners show that becoming very rich very fast can be a dangerous combination.   Everyone says that winning the lottery is the poor man’s dream, so if this is your last dream I don’t want to stomp all over it.  That is not my intent.  But God doesn’t think it is such a good idea.

1Ti 6:9  But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

The NASB in the fourth verse has ‘cease from consideration of it’.  I think it would be a great relief not to have to be doing everything to earn money and to overwork ourselves for riches.  We could be neglecting our families which are far more important.  If we express everything to  people so that we get our wallets to swell then we will be very narrow indeed.  I think that if we can avoid wealth in the future we will free ourselves from that full time job and greed, hording and selfishness.  God is not kidding when He says it is not a good idea.  Sure we could do some good, but if you are too generous it will truly sprout wings and fly away.

I also chose vss 10 and 11 because the fatherless are close to my heart.

Pro 23:10  Do not move the ancient boundary Or go into the fields of the fatherless,

Pro 23:11  For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case against you.

It was a big ‘no-no’ to move the ancient property lines or to cheat the fatherless of their inheritance by encroaching on their land because vs 11 says it, God will fight against you.  All the people, the Jews, were God’s people and they had salvation on the earth at least.  They still had to accept the Savior and find forgiveness of sins.  God had the backs of the poor.  He would oppose the oppressors of the poor and especially the fatherless ones.  The helpless poor against the strong despots of injustice is always the battle God would choose to fight.  He might get a lawyer to take your case.  He may influence the judge’s decision or spoil the oppressors crop as a way of getting back at this person for disobeying HIM.  GOD is the defender and vindicator of the poor and fatherless!

Then the last of our sections of these wise Proverbs of King Solomon- the wisest man who ever lived.

Pro 23:15  My son, if your heart is wise, My own heart also will be glad;

Pro 23:16  And my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak what is right.

Pro 23:17  Do not let your heart envy sinners, But live in the fear of the LORD always.

Pro 23:18  Surely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off.

Pro 23:19  Listen, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way.

We can make God’s heart glad by being wise and directing our hearts in the way.  Pleasing God is a goal but making Him rejoice is a special blessing to Him and us.  It has great meaning to direct our hearts in the way.  Not many do that!  We can make many hearts glad- His heart, your hearts, my heart, your parent’s heart and many others.  Think when you last did something that was like God.  You stood up for somebody or said the truth in a situation where it was needed.  Or maybe you did something nice for someone.  Think how good you felt or how much good you did.  I remember when I was in the sixth grade, I said something bad about my teacher.  I went home and my parents tried to make me call her and apologize.  I fought it and got all worked up.  But I did it and felt so relieved- no more fighting or upset.  I had done the right thing.  It is not easy to be a Christian where we are supposed to do these things.  But when we do there is relief and accomplishment and a satisfied feeling.  She didn’t forgive me right away so I had to endure her chastisement for a while.  Then I forgot the whole thing.

In vss 17-19 the Lord puts us in scenes of our lives.  Envying sinners, to live in the fear of God, being wise and directing our hearts.  Be sincere and put your heart into what you do.  Feel it, love it, do what is right with gusto.  Your life is in your hands, don’t blame others, what you do here will determine your whole eternity.  Jesus tells us what is going to happen in the afterlife, no one else knows.   ‘Once to live and then the judgment’.   And finally in these verses we have a future, a Hope and a heart all positive here.  A good future in the Lord, a solid hope for living in the way and a sincere heart will lead you to HIM.   GOD is good, He loves you so much, He cares and He will be with you.  He has done all you will ever need to get the only attainable place a human can get the other side of totally happy.  Just for loving Him and others; or living a godly life and relying on His strength.  Be wise follow the set narrow path that allows for wisdom for learning and growth.

Greater Than the Mirth of the Harvest Festivities

If you are having trouble sleeping, then a note to the wise.  Read ’em and weep.  There is actually something to learn from our reading.  It is not as hard as it may seem.  How to?, do it yourself?  JPimbo does a declarative paper.

Psa 4:1  For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

Psa 4:2  O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach? How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception? Selah.

Psa 4:3  But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; The LORD hears when I call to Him.

Psa 4:4  Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Psa 4:5  Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And trust in the LORD.

Psa 4:6  Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?” Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD!

Psa 4:7  You have put gladness in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine abound.

Psa 4:8  In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety.

David prays. He is grateful. He is glad for being relieved of some distress.  He is bold, he says ‘Be gracious’, almost like an order, to GOD he says this.  It is because he feels comfortable with God like a friend.  He wants to pray- he is king- seeking God’s counsel is what he does.  He feels that humbleness to God’s authority and it becomes in the next few verses almost a prayer of submission.  Where David nestles under HIS wings and confides what he is to God.  He is at ease as with his Father and David tells God what is going on.  The last verse I never saw it until I read it in a book.  It is much deeper than sleep.  It is ‘why’ David sleeps.  Vs. 1 says he has been in distress.  So perhaps David mentions it because he hasn’t been sleeping.

But first let us see what CH Spurgeon has to say about this psalm.  “Yes, Lord thy favor is better than life itself.  You cause them that love you to inherit substance, and fillest all their treasure.”  He means spiritual treasure. This says part of what I am meaning.  Wesley says, ”Resting upon Gods promises”.  Without God’s promises we have nothing to look forward to, nothing to accomplish.  The Giant Despair, comes upon us and locks us up in a dirty, stinking, cold dungeon and beats us.  But the key of God’s promises fits every lock there and we escape.  The last couple of sentences were about ‘Pilgrims Progress’ a book.  And we probably don’t sleep in that dungeon.

If we don’t have the promises of GOD or if we forget them and put our heads in the sand like an ostrich then we can lose sight of what is supposed to happen.  We don’t pray or read the Bible.  We neglect getting saved and get full of the world.  Life becomes confusing and our direction is bent off course and we can’t focus solely on Jesus.  His love and our forgiveness and our liberty in Christ become less important than they are.

Matthew Henry, Bible Commentator and scholar agrees that Gods favor and lovingkindness will satisfy us’, as to what fills David in spite of his distress.  ‘When God puts grace in the heart it puts gladness in our hearts.’  So the point I’m trying to make is that God can fill our hearts and minds with good things.  Joy, peace, love, patience, gentleness.  It takes a little work and perseverance to get changed but it’s worth it.  The sovereign can adjust everything so you can reach a peaceful state.

The Bible Commentary says:  “The joy and contentment David experienced in trusting the Lord was greater than the mirth of the harvest festivities.”  This fine mirth was the feelings of comraderie, fun, warmth, and love.  Continuing, “Even in distress and away from the visible evidence of the Father’s goodness he enjoyed peace and safety in his God.  True joy and peace depend not on circumstances but on God’s protection and provisions.”

David found so much peace in God that he could sleep restfully.  He could lie down not listening to the noises and being restless.  I sure understand why people can’t sleep these days.  I have a sleepless night once in a while myself.  There is so much going on in the world every day.  People are never still and are getting angry.  There is no peace in the world or in our minds sometimes.  We are worrying and feeling insecure.  God doesn’t want that.  It is really a symptom of the way our lives are lived- with lust and not much order or discipline.  There is no joy in God nor trust that everything is going to be OK.  In Him the Father provides what we need to rest.  It is from the outside over us.  Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.  Come out of the world to the family of God.  Come to church and learn His ways.

That is the point ‘Peace in the Storm’.   We can find peace in God by reading His book and praying and being what we were meant to be.  Thereby we will be avoiding guilt and condemnation.  The world says find it by doing this or that.  But by knowing God better and better the Living Word will change us into His Image.  People get so mixed up with political correctness that turns good into evil.  You can go in many directions and not find the way to peace.  God alone speaks the truth about that.  Jesus is the way.  The world is trying to break away from God by saying He doesn’t exist but the Bible says differently.  The world is persecuting Christians because government, people, organizations want power.  Jesus wants to make you whole and save you from your sins.  Listen to your heart.

You still have a heart that tells you right from wrong and that will never change.  The world has been putting down God since the sixties and many are starting to believe it, read Psalm 2.  There is no peace without Jesus.  Not from war but inside.  We can’t control what they do with war.

I told you about Spurgeon’s comments and Matthew Henry knows God.  They have said what this sleep is in Psalm4:8.  It was caused by God and His love for David and all of us.  God’s love will keep you together in times like these.  Nobody can do better.  Thank you.
